Starting April 1, 2021, you must be enrolled in or have successfully completed the University of Alberta’s Certificate to Canadian Pharmacy Practice (CCPP) program to be eligible for the provisional pharmacist register. You must complete the CCPP program prior to starting Level 3 of the Structured Practical Training program.

Prior to application to the provisional pharmacist register, you must meet the following requirements:

1.     Enroll in the NAPRA Pharmacists Gateway Canada. 

• Ensure you have chosen the Alberta College of Pharmacy (ACP) as your designated PRA and have completed the engagement process. If you have previously chosen a different PRA you will be required to add ACP as an additional PRA on your Pharmacists’ Gateway Canada profile.

2.     Meet English language fluency requirements.

• Evidence of English Language Fluency must be added to your Pharmacists’ Gateway Canada profile.

3.     Enroll in the University of Alberta’s Certificate to Canadian Pharmacy Practice (CCPP) program.

• Information about enrolling for the 2022 intake of the program will be available in the coming months. If you have a question about the CCPP program, please contact ccpp@ualberta.ca.
• Based on your personal circumstances, you may wish to successfully complete the CCPP program prior to registering as a provisional pharmacist.

4.     Successfully complete the Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada (PEBC) Qualifying Exam Part I (MCQ). The PEBC MCQ result must be current within 3 years at the time of provisional pharmacist (intern) application.

5.     You must secure an experienced preceptor for Level 1 of the Structured Practical Training (SPT) program and submit an experienced preceptor declaration form completed by your preceptor. As experienced preceptor is a pharmacist who

• meets the SPT rules for an approved preceptor, and
• precepted at least two pharmacy students in their final year of a Canadian Council for Accreditation of Pharmacy Programs (CCAPP) accredited Canadian pharmacy program within the last three years.

An experienced preceptor is not required if you have successfully completed the CCPP program.

6.     Provide evidence of authorization to work in Canada. Acceptable documentation includes

• current permanent resident card,
• Canadian citizenship card or certificate,
• current open employment visa,
• Canadian passport, and
• Canadian birth certificate.

You are required to be registered as a provisional pharmacist to complete the SPT program and the Ethics and Jurisprudence Exam.

The term for a provisional pharmacist is only two years so we strongly recommend that you apply to the provisional pharmacist register only if you have a realistic plan, including the time and commitment required to complete the CCPP program and the SPT program while on the provisional pharmacist register. If your term expires as a provisional pharmacist, you will be required to redo the SPT program and the Ethics and Jurisprudence Exam should you choose to reapply to the provisional pharmacist register.

If you meet the requirements and wish to apply to the provisional pharmacist register, please submit a completed application form with all supporting documentation as listed on page one of the application form.

1. Register as a provisional pharmacist (intern) on the ACP Provisional Register (see above).

• You will be issued a practice permit that is valid for two years from the date of registration. 

2. Complete the ACP jurisprudence learning module.

• You must complete the module prior to beginning Level 1 of the online Structured Practical Training program.
  • If you completed the jurisprudence learning module prior to January 17, 2021, you must also complete the two mandatory online courses on protecting patients from sexual abuse and sexual misconduct prior to applying to the clinical pharmacist register.
  • If you completed the jurisprudence learning module after January 17, 2021, the new version of the jurisprudence learning module includes the two mandatory courses.

3. Complete the Ethics & Jurisprudence exam. 

• The exam must be successfully completed prior to beginning Level 2 of the online SPT program. Jurisprudence exam results are valid 2 years from the date of successful completion.

4. Complete the University of Alberta’s Certificate to Canadian Pharmacy Practice (CCPP) program 

•  The CCPP program must be successfully completed prior to beginning Level 3 of the online SPT program. 

5. Complete the ACP online Structured Practical Training (SPT) program.

• The SPT program consists of a minimum of 1000 hours, but additional hours can be expected in order to demonstrate entry-to-practice competencies. Unless you have completed the CCPP program, you are required to secure an experienced preceptor for Levels 1 and 2. Learn more about the SPT program or visit the frequently asked questions.

6. Successfully complete the PEBC Qualifying Exams.

• PEBC Qualifying Exam results must be current within 3 years at the time of application for initial pharmacist licensure. If exam results exceed the 3-year limit, the provisional pharmacist (intern) will be required to retake both Part I and Part II of the PEBC Qualifying Exam prior to initial licensure in Alberta.

7. Obtain personal professional liability insurance (minimum two million dollars).
8. Submit the completed application form supporting documentation, and associated fees to the ACP office via mail or fax.

• Starting June 1, 2021, along with your application to the clinical pharmacist register, you must submit evidence of completing the two mandatory online courses on protecting patients from sexual abuse and sexual misconduct to comply with Bill 21 – An Act to Protect Patients. As part of your application, you may submit either
  • The two certificates obtained from completing the
    • AFRHP course: Protecting Patients from Sexual Abuse and Misconduct AND
    • ACP course: Standards of Practice - Sexual abuse and Sexual Misconduct; OR
  • The certificate for completing the new Jurisprudence Learning Module (JLM), which includes the two courses; the new JLM was implemented in January 2021.

1. Register on the ACP Student Register during the first semester of your first year at the University of Alberta.
2. Successfully complete your undergraduate pharmacy degree.
3. Once ACP has received your graduation confirmation (around mid-May) from the U of A, your status will change to provisional pharmacist (intern). You will receive a new practice permit mailed to the address on file.
4. Complete the ACP jurisprudence learning module.  This must be completed prior to beginning the online SPT program. You may complete the jurisprudence learning module as a student.
   • If you completed the jurisprudence learning module prior to January 17, 2021, you must also complete the two mandatory online courses on protecting patients from sexual abuse and sexual misconduct prior to applying to the clinical pharmacist register.
   • If you completed the jurisprudence learning module after January 17, 2021, the new version of the jurisprudence learning module includes the two mandatory courses.
5. Successfully complete the Ethics & Jurisprudence exam. The exam must be completed prior to beginning the online SPT program. You may complete the exam as a student, but please keep in mind that exam results are only valid for 2 years from the date of completion. 
6. All Canadian pharmacy graduates applying for initial licensure in Alberta must complete Level 3 of the ACP online Structured Practical Training (SPT) program. Level 3 requires completion of a minimum of 100 hours. To be eligible to begin Level 3 of the SPT program, the following must be completed:
   • Your status must be changed from student to provisional pharmacist (intern).
   • You must complete the ACP jurisprudence learning module.
   • You must successfully complete the Ethics & Jurisprudence exam.
